The Shamokin Area High School National Honor Society donated $1,050 to three charities using its own funds. NHS conducted a sale of Krispy Kreme Donuts for $10 a box for the proceeds to go to the following charities: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Best Friends Animal Society, and ASPCA.

The society voted on the different charities to donate to. Overall, the society raised $645 from the sale and donated previous funds to the charities.

“When there was a 3-way tie for first place, we decided to donate $350 to each totaling $1,050. Although we only raised $645, we still had enough from previous fundraisers to offset the additional funds we wanted to contribute. Overall, I would have liked to raise enough to cover the full donation, but we made it work,” explained Mrs. Megan McDevitt, National Honor Society adviser.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital funds research and covers the cost of lifesaving treatment and world-class patient care. Best Friends Animal Society provides homeless animals the help and healing needed to find permanent loving homes. ASPCA supports local shelters and rescue groups with a variety of resources to help save the lives of animals.

The National Honor Society does not donate to the same charities each year but has donated to numerous different organizations and events.

“We don't donate to the same organizations every year, but we do try to help when the need arises. In the past, we're also donated to the high school library, the back-pack program, and gift cards to victims of house fires. This year, we didn't have any specific organizations demonstrating a need for our assistance, so we decided on letting NHS members suggest and vote on charitable organizations they would like to help,” McDevitt added.
