Seventy seniors took the annual Alumni Exam on Feb. 28 in the auditorium. This exam is an opportunity for seniors to earn scholarship money and compete with each other to showcase their academic abilities.

The Alumni Exam is sponsored by the Shamokin Area Alumni Association, which is one of the oldest continuing high school alumni associations in the country. The Alumni Association is a group of Shamokin Area graduates that awards tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships to graduating seniors. Last year, they awarded over $53,000 to 16 students who took the Alumni Exam.  “We encourage all students to take the test if they plan on attending any type of college or trade school," says Mrs. Deseraee McCabe, guidance counselor. This exam provides an opportunity for students to showcase their academic abilities, which can help them secure scholarships to help pay for their education.

Last year's top scorer won $6,000 for four years of college, making this an exciting opportunity for students who are planning on attending college or trade school, according to the guidance department. The test covers topics such as math, science, English, and history, providing a well-rounded examination of the students' academic strengths.

The Alumni Exam is taken once every year and has an average of 60 students participating. The test lasts around three hours, and students register by visiting the guidance office or filling out a Google form online.

The Alumni Exam is optional, but with the opportunity to earn scholarship money, many students are expected to participate every year.

Overall, the Shamokin Area School District is excited to see the turnout for this year's Alumni Exams and looks forward to seeing the results.
