Saying farewell to beloved teachers may be one of the hardest things to do as a student. On Feb. 3, students and staff alike said goodbye to social studies teacher Mrs. Bethann Shaffer, who has taught at Shamokin Area for the past 17 years. Shaffer accepted a teaching position at Shikellamy High School, Sunbury.

There seemed to be an array of reasons for Shaffer’s departure, but the most important one was that she needed change within her life. “This was not a decision that came easy to me but after reflecting I’ve had to have a change of environment,” explained Shaffer, who will teach Civics and Government 11 and American History 9. In the future she hopes to once again teach an AP course.

Throughout her Shamokin Area tenure, Shaffer taught Ancient History 1, Ancient History 2, and AP World History, but her job didn’t just stop at teaching. She was a class-adviser in the past, co-adviser for student council in the past, and co-adviser for the Indian Pride Club. Shaffer coordinated class trips, ran the “Shim-town crazies,” and served as Shamokin Area’s teacher for the TRIO Upward Bound Program, which provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance.

She mentioned that within her time at Shamokin she most enjoyed building relationships and forming bonds with the students. Many students are going to miss  Mrs. Shaffer, but they thanked her and wished her all the best on her new and exciting adventure!

Substitute teacher Mr. Cameron Scandle will take over Mrs. Shaffer’s classes until Mr. Joe Costa, who was hired for the position, arrives mid-March.
